Docklands Light Railway Extension

Construction work started in March 2003 on the new £300m extension to the Docklands Light Railway, from the Canning Town interchange to London City Airport.

Prior to the commencement of construction work, Faithorn Farrell Timms, working in conjunction with AMEC Construction Ltd, undertook comprehensive photographic surveys of the land parcels and buildings along the route of the new line. This was then followed by extremely detailed condition surveys of all buildings and structures in the proximity of the proposed route, to provide a record of their existing condition.

Our survey reports were generally produced in the form of Schedules of Condition (Scott Schedules) with cross-referenced digital photographs of the structures, building fabric and defects. These were issued in both traditional hard copy and on CD-ROM for electronic archiving and retrieval.

The construction of the new line involved extensive construction of new viaducts across the land, bringing it into close proximity to a large number of commercial and residential properties. We were retained as Party Wall surveyors for the project and, as such, prepared and agreed more than 30 Awards under the Notice of Adjacent Excavation requirements of the Party Wall Act 1996. In addition, we have also agreed all of the Schedules of Condition with all parties having interests in the land or buildings.

Following the successful completion of the extension of the DLR to London City Airport, the line is now continuing to Woolwich Arsenal via a tunnel beneath the Thames. Faithorn Farrell Timms have again been appointed by AMEC to undertake the condition surveys of all the properties along the line of this route, with Party Wall awards for Woolwich town centre having already been agreed.
