South Haringey Children’s Centre
This project invloved the works required to enable Children’s Centre services to be offered from the site of South Haringey Infant School Nursery. The nursery site had some dilapidated outbuildings and an old derelict caretaker’s house in its grounds. It was hoped that the works would enable the problems with these structures to be addressed.
The solution Faithorn Farrell Timms proposed was to renovate the outbuildings and bring them into use as part of the Children’s Centre and to link the school building with the Caretaker’s house by constructing a new extension incorporating an entrance and Reception.
The new extension incorporates a large lantern light enabling maximum use of natural light. Movement sensors control the lights in the children’s toilets thus also saving energy and the new parts of the building are also well insulated. Bicycle racks have been also installed at the entrance.
Security is provided by use of CCTV, a door entry system and digital locks to children’s areas. An intruder alarm protects the building at night.
The disabled are catered for with both stepped and ramped entrances, an induction loop at Reception, a wheelchair accessible Reception desk and dedicated male and female facilities.
As well as a nursery the building includes spaces for training, meeting rooms, a crèche and a room dedicated for social/medical use such as ante-natal check-ups, etc.
The construction work was completed in August 2008 by Bolt & Heeks Ltd, over a 40 week period and under a JCT Intermediate Form of Contract (2005), at a cost of £800,000.
